Self-Drive or Hire a Driver in Lombok: Which Is Right for You?

July 21, 2026

One of the first questions people have when planning a Lombok road trip: should I drive myself, or hire a driver? The honest answer depends on your comfort on unfamiliar roads, the kind of trip you’re planning, and your budget.

Self-Drive

Best suited if you:

  • Are comfortable driving on narrow, winding, and sometimes steep roads
  • Want full control over your schedule — stopping whenever you want, changing plans without coordinating with anyone
  • Are traveling as a couple or small group with minimal luggage
  • Want to keep costs down

Self-drive gives you the most flexibility. On the price side, it’s typically 30–40% cheaper than the equivalent with-driver rate. See the full rate breakdown by vehicle type for the specific numbers.

One thing worth knowing: Lombok’s roads are genuinely varied. The main roads around Mataram, Senggigi, and the south coast are straightforward. The roads heading north toward Sembalun and the Rinjani foothills are a different story — winding, steep in sections, and poorly lit at night. If those are on your itinerary, be honest with yourself about your comfort level before choosing self-drive.

With a Driver

Best suited if you:

  • Are visiting Lombok for the first time and don’t know the roads
  • Are traveling with family, young children, or a larger group
  • Would rather not spend mental energy on navigation during your holiday
  • Want local input on where to eat, what to see, and which routes to take

A local driver brings more than just driving. They know current road conditions, can find alternatives when roads are blocked or being repaired, and often have genuinely useful recommendations for restaurants and viewpoints you won’t find on tourist maps. This matters most for destinations with more challenging routes, like Sembalun or Pink Beach in East Lombok.

Driver + Fuel

The most straightforward option. Both the driver and fuel are included in the flat daily rate — nothing to calculate, nothing to top up mid-trip. For full-day routes like the Rinjani area or a south coast loop, fuel costs can be higher than expected on the roads involved. Run the numbers against the with-driver rate before assuming one is cheaper.
