Most people choose a rental car based on price or passenger count alone — but Lombok’s roads vary significantly by area, and the right vehicle for a beach day near the airport is a different choice from the right vehicle for a mountain route to Sembalun. Here’s how to match the car to your actual trip.
Lombok’s Three Road Zones
Before getting to vehicle types, it helps to understand how Lombok’s roads actually break down:
City and west coast (Mataram, Senggigi, the coastal highway) — well-maintained, wide roads. Any vehicle handles this zone comfortably, including city cars.
Southern coast (Mandalika, Kuta Lombok, Tanjung Aan) — significantly upgraded following the MotoGP circuit development. Smooth and accessible for all vehicle types.
North and east (Sembalun, the Rinjani foothills, Pink Beach in East Lombok) — roads narrow, climb steeply, and in places are partially unpaved. Vehicle choice genuinely affects both comfort and confidence on these routes.
City Cars (Agya, Brio) — 2–4 Passengers
The most affordable option. Fuel-efficient, easy to park, and comfortable for flat routes and city driving.
Good for: Couples or small groups exploring Mataram, Senggigi, and the Mandalika area. Any route that stays on well-paved, relatively flat roads.
Not suited for: The mountain road to Sembalun or the Rinjani area — engine power isn’t enough for sustained steep climbs. Also not practical if you have a lot of luggage or more than four people.

Standard MPVs (Avanza, Veloz, Xpander) — 5–6 Passengers
The most popular and versatile category. Significantly more passenger and luggage space than a city car, and capable enough for most of Lombok’s roads.
Good for: Families, groups of four to six, and any trip covering multiple destinations in a day. Comfortable for Mandalika, Senggigi, and most of the north coast routes.
Note for Sembalun routes: Manageable, but the engine can feel strained on the longer, steeper climbs. If Sembalun is a main destination, consider moving up to an SUV or Innova.

SUVs (Raize, Rush, XL7) — 4–6 Passengers
Higher ground clearance and more torque. The right call when your route mixes city driving with genuinely hilly or rough terrain.
Good for: Routes involving steep climbs (Sembalun, Rinjani foothills) or partially unpaved roads (Pink Beach, East Lombok). The price difference from a standard MPV is usually modest, but the comfort difference on challenging terrain is real.

Premium MPVs (Innova Reborn, Innova Zenix) — 6–7 Passengers
The best option if you need more capacity and a more comfortable long-distance ride. The Innova handles all of Lombok’s road types including the mountain routes — more comfortable than a standard MPV without jumping to a large SUV. Also available for self-drive.
Good for: Groups of six or seven, multi-day trips around the island, or anyone who prioritises cabin comfort on longer journeys.

Large Group Vehicles (Hiace Commuter & Premio) — 14 Passengers
For bigger groups who want to stay together in one vehicle. Per person, the Hiace works out considerably cheaper than booking two or three separate cars.
Good for: Large family groups, company trips, and tour groups. Driver required — not available for self-drive. Works best on well-paved, relatively flat routes; for mountain roads like Sembalun, smaller vehicles are a better fit.
