Self-drive rental gives you a level of flexibility that no other option matches — you decide when to leave, where to stop, and you can change plans without coordinating with anyone. But before you take the keys, there are a few things worth understanding to make sure the trip goes smoothly.
What You Need to Drive
For a self-drive rental in Lombok:
- A valid driver’s licence — this is the non-negotiable requirement. Make sure yours doesn’t expire during your rental period. If your licence was issued outside Indonesia, check whether you need an International Driving Permit before you travel.
- Original ID or passport — held as collateral during the rental and returned when the car comes back in good condition.
- Security deposit — the amount varies by vehicle type. Returned in full after the car is checked on return.
No third-party travel insurance is required (though there’s nothing wrong with having it).
Which Routes Work Well for Self-Drive
Not all roads in Lombok are equally suited to driving yourself. Here’s an honest breakdown by zone:
Mataram and Senggigi — the easiest roads on the island. Wide lanes, clear signage, predictable traffic. Fine even for first-time visitors who want to drive themselves.
Mandalika and the south coast — roads here are in excellent condition following the MotoGP circuit development. One of the most comfortable self-drive routes, though a few remote beach access tracks have short rough sections.
Senaru and the waterfalls — roads are generally good until the Bayan area, then narrow approaching Senaru. Still comfortable for self-drive as long as you leave early and aren’t rushing.
Sembalun and the Rinjani foothills — the most demanding route. Long climbs, sharp bends, and some narrow sections. Doable if you’re comfortable driving mountain roads — but the vehicle you choose matters a lot here (at minimum an SUV or Innova). Check the vehicle selection guide before booking for this route.
Pink Beach, East Lombok — a long drive (~2–2.5 hours from Mataram) with some unpaved road near the beach. Manageable as a self-drive, but it’s a full day of driving round-trip — factor that in before committing.
Practical Tips Before and During Your Drive
Fill the tank before leaving town. Petrol stations are easy to find in Mataram and Senggigi but get sparse after that. If your route heads into remote areas, fill up before you go.
Download offline maps for your destination. Mobile signal can be unreliable in Lombok’s mountain areas and parts of the east. Having an offline map loaded before you leave is a simple safeguard.
Start early. This applies to almost every route in Lombok — cooler weather, quieter roads, and a time buffer if anything unexpected comes up.
Photograph the car before you drive off. Document the vehicle’s condition — including any existing scratches or dents — before the trip starts. This protects you from any dispute on return.
